Despacito's popularity is evident from the number of viewers on the YouTube video sharing page. According to a report published by Quartz, Despacito's video clips have been witnessed over 2.5 billion times.
The latest report, now Despacito became the most played song of all time. To quote The Guardian's page, the song has been played as much as 4.6 billion times worldwide through various streaming music platforms.
This data is published by Universal Music Latin Entertainment. That way, the song 'Sorry' popularized Justin Bieber was in second position and played as much as 4.38 billion times.
Universal CEO Lucian Grainge heralded the remarkable achievement by saying, "(Platform) Streaming has opened up the possibility of a song with different rhythms, languages and cultures being the most heavily heard in the world."
Despacito himself has been at the top of the UK charts for nine weeks in a row. In America even this song occupies the peak of the charts.
This achievement, said Grainge, also assisted with music streaming services such as Spotify which provides various types of songs, including the type of Latin pop music that has been only enjoyed in the country of origin.
Not only Despacito, some other popular Latin pop songs in Spotify include 'Mi Gente' sung by J Balvin, Malware's Los Felices, and Danny Ocean's 'Me Rehuso'.
